The Nuclear Winter

Gaia smiled for a second, her two children were finally alone with her, she could see the recognition strike them, the sudden idea chilling them to the core, they knew what they were seeing deep down, but neither one of them would dare consider the thought lest their hopes be crushed like they had in the past.

"Years ago, when you were infants, a great misfortune fell upon you both, one of you greater than the other, but your pain was felt, shared…"

Gaia took a step forward toward towards the girls and put a gentle hand on both of their shoulders.

"I picked you both for very different reasons, and not because you happen to be sisters… that fact simple ended up being a pleasant consequence…"

Gain looked to Emma then to Nizhoni and back to Emma.

"You are sisters… twins to be precise"

She said gently, she felt a familiar churn in her stomach, while Gaia was mother earth and soul creator when she broke her own rules she always felt a slight discomfort, the sisters were separated and by the rules of the earth they should have found each other the same way, but Gaia had stepped in, their pain was a beacon that transcended even Gaia's own rules of interference.

"I'll give you a moment, but I'm afraid that’s all I can allow at the moment, but rest assured there will be time"

Gaia swept out of the room leaving the twins along, she travelled lightly, even though she walked she appeared to glide through the air, her purple and white silk robe trailed behind her majestically.

Gaia looked to the sky as if an invisible voice was speaking to her. She stopped in the middle of the island and swept her hands towards the sky. There was a rumble throughout Hope Island, The Island itself felt as though it shook, and slowly at first a small part of the ocean on the coast of the island began to part and spread. A vessel began to ascend out of the water and slowly rest on top of the surface, bobbing like a boat. The Vessel while looking like a jet was unlike any human vessel seen before. It was a light hazy yellow colour; the windows were thick and tinted blue and in some light purple. The Jet had a natural look too it, like it was an ancient insect, the wings were folded behind it like a sparrow. Gaia smiled at the machine, it replied with a soft buzzing noise, as it were alive.

Each of the chosen would soon begin to feel their rings vibrating, the stone embedded in their rings would hum and light slightly, they had never used their powers before… but they were about to, they were being summoned by Gaia for the first time. Tyler would feel the call more than the others

"It's time my chosen"

Gaia said in each of the five minds.

*Emmas knees threatened to knock together as her entire body began to shake. She stared at Gaia with wide dark eyes, her lower lip trembling in shock, before those same dark eyes turned to look into a pair of eyes as intriguing and as beautiful as her own. She had never known a “family”, and the thought of having a sister had never occurred to her, not even in her wildest fantasies.

Still, the similarities between the two girls was undeniable, and she could tell by the other girls reaction that she too was finding this revelation more than a little strange herself. Emma nodded in Gaia’s direction, as she told the girls they had only a few minutes before she left, leaving them alone.

Emma stared at the other girl, and as she did, it became more and more obvious that she was looking at the perfect mirror reflection of herself. There was no denying it, this girl was definitely her “twin” and the realisation both electrified and terrified her at the same time. Her shaking legs threatened to buckle beneath her as she took two hesitant steps towards the girl.

~Uh… I’m.. Emma..~ she swallowed hard, surprised by her newfound difficulty at speaking. Grasping for words, while also gasping for breath, Emma stood and stared at her new found sister in silence.

If not for the sudden vibration of the ring and the changing colour of the stone to divert her attention, Emma might have stood like that forever. As Gaias’ voice could be heard within her head however, Emma nodded slightly before automatically turning to go to her. Turning to make sure her sister was doing the same, Emma called out

~Guess its time to find out what its time for.. heh?~ her lame joke, a desperate attempt at lightening the situation which felt oppressively stifling in such a small space. Once outside, she took more than a few deep breaths of clear fresh air to clear her lungs, as she walked towards the beach to where Gaia was waiting. *

[Nizhoni Asdza]

~:~Gaia had yet to finish her first sentence when shock stole the breath from Nizhoni’s lungs. The misfortune she referred to was undoubtedly the same recited daily by Odatshedoh throughout her childhood until his dying breath just over a year ago. It was a sense of loss she had faced every day and was unsure how to live without as she stared mesmerized by her sister’s identical face. That they were twins had made it into her father’s story with each retelling, however, that her features could be shared so perfectly was not something easily prepared for. It made the situation somehow more surreal than moments ago when it had just been an earth spirit and a group of strangers discussing the pros and cons of magical, element-controlling rings on a white sandy beach far from home. Even an open mind was likely to close after too many concurrent surprises. Denial held back rising hopes and instinctively Niz retreated from the celestial hand on her shoulder and the woman she’d spent her life trying to find. One did not casually stumble across their long-lost sister while in the process of accepting power over an element and a mission to save the world. In the real world, these things happened separately- if at all- at drastically different times in one’s life. Enough was enough for one afternoon. Her mouth, too dry and agape to assist, failed to verbalize this defense before Gaia glided away, abandoning Niz the only time she had yet to need her.

The silence in which she stared and was stared back at by her twin belied Nizhoni’s true urges to panic, flee, embrace and/or cry in perhaps a most chaotic and intense show of emotion of all time. In the end, it was the wise and gentle tone of her father’s voice inside her that imparted the courage to accept this miracle gift and weep openly for it. As “Emma” moved forward, she opened her arms to welcome her sister into the first of many hugs to come. Tears of loss and joy mixed until her face was streaked and damp from the flood. Far more important than saving the world was the chance to fulfill an oath to their departed parents and Niz would start by sharing her true name. Drawing her out to arm’s length, she shook her head and offered a watery smile.~:~

“Now, perhaps. To your People you have been and always will be Onotah- my sister. How long I have waited to call you by name…Too long…”

~:~She was interrupted and broke off as Gaia summoned them, reluctantly releasing when she would rather have held Onotah near until the newness wore off. She wondered secretly if it ever would, but followed her twin towards yet another part of their destiny. Whatever the time, the two of them had a lifetime to catch up. Along the way, Niz used the cotton sleeve of her work shirt to dry her cheeks and set herself mentally for the next challenge.~:~

“I suppose it is. I am ready for whatever that may be.”

Alek's mouth dropped open as the impressive vessel rose from the water, it shimmered in the sunlight and seemed to change colour as he moved closer towards it. Each bead of water glistened like diamonds on the hull of the ship. Alek was close enough to put his hand out and touch the cool metal, the ship responded, it hummed gently and the window of the ship slid open revealing 5 seats, it was small inside, perhaps the size of a helicopter. The Interior was the most bizarre aspect of the ship however, it appeared as if the interior was the inside of an animal, the ship moved ever so slightly as if it was breathing and the seats and controls were a dark yellow colour.

'I'm driving!'

Alek said enthusiastically, the ship lowered slightly, enough for Alek to pull himself up the wing and sit in the pilot seat, it was them comfortable thing he had ever sat in. The Ship once again hummed. Alek felt the ship tighten at his neck and small silver clear bar wrapped around his face, and covered his left eye. It hit him like a ton of bricks, he instantly knew how to violet the ship, it hummed in anticipation,

'Get in guys! It's so cool'

He said with glee as he wrapped his fingers around the twin controls. It once again hummed in delight.
