(Please excuse the lateness of the post.)
Though he may have appeared distant and unaware, Nazz had been silently taking everything in that happened around him. It was always best to not get too intent on certain goings on lest one miss more important affairs. With out ordering a drink, Nazz waited for the Don to show. Fortunately he didn't need to wait too long. When the Don entered, Nazz didn't seem to notice, he made no signs to acknowledge the presence of the Don. No disrespect was meant by this lack of acknowledgment, it was more of an insurance. By not seeming to be involved with the Don in public, that meant it would be that much harder for the two to be connected should either one for some reason go down.
Nazz waited till a bit after the Don went into the back before ordering a rather expensive drink. Once brought the drink Nazz stood and walked toward the room the Don disappeared into, leaving a generous tip on the counter. On his way to the room Nazz walked past the piano player and singer. On his way past the singer he set down the drink next to her hand. It was a subtle play at her but also a slight distraction for anyone watching him. While delivering the drink, Nazz never broke stride and soon found himself approaching Big Mama. When he neared her, he tipped his hat, a display of manners and a way to hide his eyes.
It was true Nazz wasn't directly invited into the room, but it was more or less understood that he was supposed to follow. The Don wouldn't have called him here had he not wanted to speak with him. With out a knock or any other type of warning, Nazz slipped into the room keeping as silent as possible. He didn't want to disrupt anything going on. With his continued stealth Nazz took to leaning against a wall awaiting what ever might come.

(( Big Mama ))
*Lanas dark red lips stretched into a contented smile as Ava suggested the name of the Phoenix. Her explanation of the club rising from the flames to reinvent itself caused a warm glow to settle around Big Mamas shoulders as she nodded her approval.
~Yes, mon cherie.. "The Phoenix" sounds just perfect! Perhaps the sign that we make could also resemble flames.. orange and red.. with a large phoenix rising out of the flames..~ Her indigo eyes sparkled with excitement as she reached forward to hug the girl in a tight embrace. ~What on earth would I do without you dear one?~ she breathed into her left ear, before Ava managed to escape her enthusiastic hug to trail off after Holly. As her gaze surveyed the room before her, Lana noticed more than one man who's gaze followed Ava as she made her way around the room. Chuckling to herself, Lana wondered how many of these men would be lucky enough to know Ava intimately by the end of the night.
The club was jumping with patrons and bootleggers alike and Big Mama nodded absently to Nazz as he approached her and then disappeared into the back room with the Don. It still bristled her nerves somewhat that there was buisness happening in the back of her club that she wasnt a hundred percent privvy to, but Big Mama knew that without the Don she probably wouldnt of been able to reopen her club in such grand style so quickly, if at all.
Lana glanced at the clock above the bar and then towards the door. They hadn’t arranged a particular time for him to arrive, they hadn’t even discussed a day, but Lana knew he would be here soon. She sensed that he was on his way and the sensation electrified her. As more and more people approached her, Lana was in her element as she smiled broadly and became everything that Big Mama was expected to be. Gregarious, engaging and slightly flirtatious, Big Mama held her small circle of fans in complete and utter adoration as they stood around her, eagerly exchanging tasty tidbit’s of information. It was for this information that Lana lived for, as you could never know when something thought previously unimportant, would prove to be the ace up the sleeve.
The crowd grew until soon there was only standing room in what was quickly becoming the smoky club. A small dance floor had been quickly established in the surrounding area of the piano, while others stood in small groups, chatting over drinks and smiling as they watched the dancers. One woman in particular was doing a particularly captivating show with a blue feather boa, and Lana chuckled to herself before she looked away.
As her impatience grew, Lana paid more close attention to the men in the room. Every time the door opened, her voilet orbs searched the entrance hall for a sign of him, yet for now, her wait proved futile. Glancing back up at the clock several times over the next few hours, Lana waited patiently to see his familiar face.*

(So if nobody's interacted with Ava, I'll assume she was ignored. Skip her in the posting order, and as soon as I have something to write about, I'll post.)

((Er.. Im sorry Leets, I didnt respond to her talking about the Phoenix's name. *cringes* In my rush to get through my massive to - do list, when I reread the posts before I replied, I just saw Ava trail after Holly and go on the hunt... I was kinda looking forward to seeing Ava select some poor unsuspecting male OR female *grins* for her next form of entertainment.. I'll edit my post now to include Big Mamas response to the title, and hopefully you will still post. I didnt realy have anything to respond to myself, but I still managed to post that at least Big Mama is there and holding court.. *sighs and looks to Timmy* We need some more action for people to do in this plot Mister Don Meigion! ))

It was the only door in the alley, and Edgar Carlon had to kick away a pile of refuse that had accumulated there in the last two years. Sliding the key into the lock, he hesitated before opening it. High overhead, ironwork balconies jutted into the open air between the massive brick buildings that formed this small tunnel, and clothesline strung between them blotted out the stars. He could hear voices from above, calling through open windows, and strains of a tune he'd never heard drifted down from someone's radio. Edgar wondered if anyone even remembered his place was down here; hopefully not. "Fast Eddy" was never real popular with the upstairs neighbors.
The door swung in, and Eddy clicked on the single light next to the threshold. The place wasn't much to look at; it was actually an old storeroom he'd cleared out and claimed for his own. The cement floors and brick walls reminded him too much of the cell he'd spent the last two years in. There was a small bed, with his foot locker at the end, along with a single chair and a round card table in the corner. Things looked just the way he'd left them.
There was a large white box on the table, with a small note sitting atop it. Curiously, Eddy picked up the note and scanned it. The box was a gift from Vinny Fatone, the capo he'd played fall-guy for, expressing gratitude for "the favor he'd been done". At the bottom of the note was an address, along with the assertion that he should dress sharp. Eddy dropped the note onto the table and pulled the lid off the box, tossing it aside. Inside was a suit, expensive and with all the accessories. With a grin, Fast Eddy got dressed for a night on the town.
***********************************************
Eddy stepped out of the cab outside the club, feeling like a new man. He looked himself over approvingly. The pin-striped suit was sized perfectly for him, as were the leather belt and high-polish shoes. Satin spats and a silk tie, with ruby cufflinks to complete the look. Eddy knew he was a handsome devil, but he hadn't looked this good in, well... ever. Certainly not in his prison jumper. Not before prison, either. Expensive clothes have that effect, he thought to himself.
The club was jumping, and Fast Eddy knew he'd find Lana inside -- it was just her kinda place. He hadn't seen her in a while... two years, four months and eight days, to be exact. That was the last time he'd brought her a load of booze, liquid gold in this dry city. A grin split his face; she was the kinda dame that a guy did stupid things for, like smuggling illegal goods. Maybe she would still need a runner; Eddy was one of the best. He set his fedora at a jaunty angle and headed inside.
The place was smokey, and loud. It was standing-room only, and Eddy stood in back to surveying the place. The piano player was good, but the singing girl was better -- hadn't he seen her somewhere before? There was a small space cleared for dancing, but he wasn't interrested. Fast Eddy scanned the crowd, and it didn't take him long to pick out Big Mama. She stood amidst a flock of amirers -- that much hadn't changed. Anywhere she went, Lana Celeste had admirers. His grin widened. He checked his cufflinks, straightened his tie, and started making his way through the crowd.

(( Lana "Big Mama" Celeste))
*Lana stared in amazement as she realised just how packed the club now was. Music was blaring, drinks were flowing, and more and more people were arriving. Considering that they did not officially open for another week, Lana saw the crowded club as a good omen of things to come. She was brought back to the moment however by the sound of laughter and smiled as Charlie stood before her, telling the punch line for what seemed to be the longest, most confusing joke in history. She had long ago lost the thread of the tale he was spinning, her attention quickly turning to her shoes which were the same shade of peacock blue as her pencil skirt that she wore over her silk stockings. Two of her toes, the nails painted the same dark red as her lips, were visible through the peep hole of her shoes, and Lana wiggled these toes as she smiled down at them. A pale blue blouse had been given the task of keeping her ample bosom restrained, and it managed to succeed in its task, allowing only a mere hint of her cleavage before nipping in at her narrow waist and flaring out over the skirt. Her sleeves were long and loose, intricately embroidered with dark blue, grey and white thread and beads. These same colours were echoed in the hair pin that kept her platinum blonde bob curls in perfect place. Her eyes of the lightest violet were further accentuated with the pale blue eye shadow and grey charcoal pencil she had used to paint her eyes. Her lips were of course, their trademark shade of bright red.
As her circle of admirers all roared with laughter while Charlie stood back and enjoyed his moment, the hairs on the back of Lana’s neck bristled and she straightened her back before turning around, her indigo eyes flashing as she peered around the room. Surprised that he had managed to arrive without her noticing, Lana knew at once that Eddy had indeed arrived. Her eyes scanned the crowd as her anticipation grew. Almost instantly, they locked on his deep dark brown ones, and she felt a shot of adrenalin race throughout her entire being. Gasping out loud, she turned vaguely to smile her thanks to Charlie before she addressed the group, begged their forgiveness and made her leave. Once out of her reach of her circle of admirers, Lana’s pace quickened as she practically pushed her way through the crowd. Slowing down as she approached him, she ran an approving glance over his attire.
~Looking sharp there Eddy.. seems the slammer agrees with you, eh?~ She stepped forward so that she was within inches from his face. Grinning from ear to ear, her voice lowered as she moved even closer to him. ~Ah, but you are a sight for sore eyes Eddy.. its been far too long..~ Finally her glossy red lips found his and in one kiss she showed him just how much she had been missing his company for the past two years. Pulling away from him reluctantly, she moved to his side and slipped her hand through the crook of his right arm. ~Come, let me buy you a drink..~ she purred, pulling him towards the bar. As they wove throughout the crowd, Lana chatted happily over her shoulder, nearly shouting to be heard over the din.
~We’ve got the best booze money can buy, some of it’s even on tap. Of course, it doesn’t compare with what you used to bring me… but perhaps we can remedy that now that you’re out? Are you still on Vinny’s payroll or what? He told me he would look out for you when you got out…~ she trailed off as they reached the bar. After pushing her way through another group of admirers that seemed intent on grabbing hold of her to tell her just how fabulous the new club was turning out to be, Lana placed her order with the bartender and then pointed over towards where the VIP section of the club was still being established. The bartender nodded in agreement and Lana weaved her way through the crowd around the bar to make her way back to Eddy.
The noise of the club seemed to have grown and she had to shout to be heard. ~Come with me doll, I got somewhere special for us..~ With that she took his hand and began to lead him towards the left side of the club. There was a large fish tank that was currently being set up to house an odd assortment of exotic fish. It was a staple feature of Lanas clubs, and also hid the entrance way to the VIP area. Behind the fish tank and several strategically placed potted palms and ferns, three large chaise lounges covered in a soft velvet of the deepest darkest red waited. A few lamps were placed in far corners of the alcove to provide the perfect soft lighting. A textured rug on the floor before the lounges perfectly matched the scattered cushions. Lana ran an approving glance over the space as she settled on one of the lounges and pulled Eddy down to sit beside her.
~So, ~ she drawled. ~Tell me, how was it inside? Did you get the letters I sent? And the pictures… ? When you didn’t write back… well.. ..~ she trailed off and looked away from him.~ *

Lana's words of praise were like a sweet, well-remembered tune and Ava flashed a brilliant smile at the woman whose wings she'd been taken under. Not long ago, she'd been less than a social speck -- a waif left wandering the streets after an argument had gone bad with a lover; she'd been ousted after threatening him with a pair of sharpened scissors (and that 'threatening' had, of course, involved some minor bloodshed), and with only a few months' waitressing experience under her belt, Ava had been poorly prepared for the world. She had, at first, petitioned what remaining relatives she'd had for some sort of work and board...and when that didn't pan out (her vicious temper and inclination for partying hadn't meshed well with their middle-class, run-of-the-mill existence), Ava had ventured to the big city...heart full of ambition and pockets very nearly empty.
That's where she'd met Lana -- "Big Mama" -- and that's where the real story of her life began. A young upstart with a quick, cutting tongue and doe eyes, Ava had at first clung to Lana's skirt like a child. In public she was every bit the self-possessed flapper...but for the first few months of life in the city, Ava had petitioned Lana for her advice on everything from clothes to choices in boys (and, sometimes, girls). Although she'd been her own woman for quite some time now, she never failed to jump at an opportunity to show her loyalty to Big Mama...in ways that weren't always legal -- or sane.
After sashaying to the piano and watching her golden-voiced girlfriend for a few minutes, Ava's eyes wandered the room -- stopping momentarily on Nazz, on the Don, and on Eddy. Running her tongue across her teeth and growling low in her throat, Ava decided that it was high time for a drink...well, a drink and a little mischief, really. Her only roadblock at the moment was the lack of the latter. She didn't like to wait, but waiting had to be done...especially if she wanted to help turn the notch up on club activity...

Fast Eddy slipped through the crowded club, eyes on Big Mama and her crowd of sycophants, thinking that maybe he'd sneak up on her. When she looked his way, he almost jumped out of his skin. How did she do that? Lana excused herself and started shoving her way toward him. His own step quickened at the impending reunion.
With an apologetic grin, Eddy stepped between two sequined hens, "Scuse me, ladies," that eyed him appreciatively as he passed, and reared back just in time to avoid colliding with a dancing dame spinning on the outstretched hand of some mook in a cheap suit (Eddy wasn't one to judge; he had a few just like it in mothballs back at his place). He watched the pair twirl past, and realized he was standing on the edge of the dance floor. He worked his way around, and by the time he had, he'd lost sight of Lana.
Eddy twisted this way and that, scanning the crowd as he searched for the belle of the ball. Was she trying to lose him? The last thing he'd expected was for Lana to give him the slip. He thought ruefully of all the letters she'd written to him while he was in the slam. The pictures she'd sent helped get him through (he had one tucked in his pocket now). Eddy knew all along that the warden didn't send his mail. The warden didn't send out any mail for the birds that didn't sing his tune. Eddy didn't sing for nobody. Well, no screw with a chip on his shoulder, anyway.
Eddy almost gave up searching for Lana, when a voice from behind floated above the noise of the club.
~Looking sharp there Eddy.. seems the slammer agrees with you, eh?~
Eddy spun around, a Cheshire grin on his face. "It's the suit. A present from Vinny. A sharp suit can even make an old tomcat like me look like a million bucks. Besides, a little time in the pen can do some good for the body. Not much to do in a place like that than work out." Aside from avoiding rape in the shower and shanks in the lunchroom, but that went unspoken. "You're looking pretty snappy yourself, Lana. I think the adoration keeps you young.
~Ah, but you are a sight for sore eyes Eddy.. its been far too long..~
Big Mama closed in, and her mouth found his with an easy familiarity. The club, the folks, the music, all faded away, and to Eddy, it was only him and her. Eddy had dreamed about this kiss, as he'd dreamed about the last one, almost three years before. Her lips were as soft as a prison pillow was hard, and she smelled like lavender and passion. Eddy returned the kiss with gusto, ready to gather her up in his arms and carry her out of the joint, but restrained himself. This was her club, after all, and it wouldn't do to make off with the leading lady.
Lana disengaged, then seized Eddy by the arm and began dragging him across the club. As he wiped her lipstick from his mouth, she shouted to him over her shoulder, but most of what she said was lost in the clamor. Eddy did his best to keep up, and before long they were through the crowd and into a private room behind an empty fish tank.
The lady settled onto a plush lounge and pulled him down beside her. Her smile was magic in the soft lighting, and the smell of a woman was intoxicating to him. He struggled to keep his eyes in respectful places, but couldn't resist putting his hand on her knee as they talked.
~So tell me, how was it inside? Did you get the letters I sent? And the pictures… ? When you didn’t write back… well...~
She looked away from him, her face downcast. Eddy squeezed her knee gently. "Hey, hang on, now. You know what its like. Screws get their kicks puttin' it to the guys inside. The only way to get a letter out is to dance to their tune."
"But I thought about you every day, Lana. Every night, too." Eddy reached into his suit jacket and produced a slightly rumpled old black-and-white photo. "I kept this pinned to the cot above me, so the last thing I saw every night was your smiling face." The photo was from their last weeks before the slam. Lana sat on the hood of Eddy's car, long legs crossed before her and her hair done up in an elaborate coif. And that same dazzling smile that made guys go all numb in the head. Eddy was standing next to her, leaning on one elbow propped on the car, and Lana's arm was around his shoulder. "Look, see? Even when I was locked up, we were together."
Eddy tugged at his collar, the tie felt like it was starting to choke him. He felt warm, but he thought maybe it was just Lana. She did that to him. He shook it off, not wanting to sound maudlin. He cleared his throat. "So, got any leads on where an old smuggler can find work? I'd hook up with Vinny, but he's an important man, now. Real big mover and shaker, from what I hear. Wouldn't do him no good to be spotted gabbin' with an ex-con. I bet I could hook up with that old Portuguese crew..."
Eddy stopped himself with a smack on the forehead. "You gotta have your own runners by now! I've been gone for so long, and the world don't wait for no one. But if you got friends that need supply, send 'em my way, doll. "
"Oh yeah, an' one more thing. Know where I can find some new digs? My old place is just a little too... uh, closed up for me. I wanna find a place that's more homey. A place with a few windows, and no bars." Fast Eddy grinned. "And a garage."

*Running an appreciative gaze over the handsome man beside her, Lana’s breath caught in her throat. Although his features had been burned into her brain a long time ago, she had forgotten how breathtakingly handsome he was, literally. She worried about how some of the men in prison might have taken to his movie star good looks, but was hesitant to ask him about it. Eddy was the kind of guy who would only give information if it was his to volunteer. She had learnt a few years back that he didn’t like being asked about anything he hadn’t already spoken of himself. Considering his time away though, he looked relatively healthy and in good spirits, the suit he wore apparently a gift from Vinny. Lana smiled cooly at the mention of the asshole that had been responsible for sending her lover away. They still managed to do business together, but their relationship had definitely cooled while Eddy had been locked up. She reached out to run her hand suggestively down his silk tie as she grinned at him.
~It’s nice to see Vinny is good for somethin’..~ she drawled in her husky voice.
Her red lips still buzzing from their all too short and quick kiss, Lana smiled as her thick alabaster lashes fluttered over indigo orbs as he held out the photograph for her to see. His words made her toes curl inside her peacock blue peep toe stilettos as she gazed at that memory forever captured in black and white film.
She remembered that day like it was yesterday. Eddy had surprised her by picking her up early in the morning. They had driven down the coast, where he had taken her to her favourite beach and surprised her with a picnic lunch. They had spent the day laying in the sun, eating and drinking, splashing at the shore and making sand castles, before making love as the sun set over the ocean. It had been one of the best days of her life, and she had been glad that they had stumbled across the strange man with the twirly moustache who had been walking around carrying his huge Gandolfi camera. Laughing, they had posed in front of Eddy’s car to capture the essence of that day, and Lana smiled wistfully as she could still hear the seagulls and the waves crashing against the shore.
~We should go back there Eddy.. now that you’re out of the slammer.. I haven’t had a day like that since you went down. And I understand.. about the screws.. but still.. you coulda got some word to a girl, ya know? I didn’t know if you were dead or alive, or just given up on me.. on us… ~
She laughed and clapped her hands like a small child as he asked her if she knew where he could find work.
~Well, you can work with me of course! And yeah, I do have a few runners, but now, they will have to get used to you running the show. I’ve been looking for someone to manage them for a while now. The job pays good.. and .. considering its you..~ her hand found his thigh as she gave it a gentle squeeze while leaning into him as she purred ~I’ll even throw in room and board as part of the deal.~
She laughed, the sound rich and throaty. ~So, if you accept my proposal, how about we seal the deal with kiss..~ *

~We should go back there Eddy.. now that you’re out of the slammer~
Eddy had thought of the same thing a thousand times since the photograph had come in the mail. It was an island of calm and tranquility on a sea of anger and hatred. Pinned to the cot above him, that picture had been his anchor to humanity when Eddy spent much of his time on hating. Hating himself a little more each day for agreeing to do this favor for Vinny; hating Vinny for asking; hating the screws; hating the mooks around him. All that hate burned bright and hot, giving him strength when he was battling thugs and mobsters in the yard, fighting for his food in the mess, or defending himself from shower room rape gangs.
But at night... at night, all the hate in the world didn't stave off the loneliness and misery. Promises of wealth and influence didn't mean much to him, when all he wanted was to wake up and find it was all a nightmare. In the dark, laying on his cot, Eddy would lay awake daydreaming of Lana, his senses filled by the memories of days spent in joyous living, and nights of unleashed passion. His eyes were filled by sunlight on golden hair, and eyes that stared into his soul. He could smell her perfume in the salty sea air, taste her skin, even hear her gasping breath in his ear as their bodies twined together in ecstasy. His mind would often wander back to that final night with Lana Celeste.
She sat astride him, gazing down on him, her glistening flesh striped in light and shadow by the yellow glow of the street lamps filtered through the window blinds. Her eyes were two glimmering points in a face cast in shadow. In that moment, he had almost found the courage to speak the words in his soul, to proclaim his love, to bring forth the ring that he would soon go to prison for, the same ring that was now hidden away in his footlocker in the cramped little cell of an apartment across town. But before he could summon the strength, their passions had rekindled, and thoughts and words were lost in lovemaking.
A smile gently touched Eddy's lips. Yeah, the beach. That would be perfect.
Eddy's mind snapped back to the present, and he put the thought from his mind for now. First, he would get himself stable and readjusted. Lana Celeste was offering him the opportunity of a smuggler's lifetime, and he wasn't about to let it pass by.
~So, if you accept my proposal, how about we seal the deal with kiss..~
Eddy couldn't hide his smile. "It's a deal," he said, and he reached out to gently cradle Lana's face and neck as their lips met, slow and deep, giving the kiss that the first one should have been. He felt his soul stirring, and he could feel hers begin to respond. Eddy held himself in check, and instead he gently pulled out of the kiss. He stood, taking Big Mama's hand, helping her to her feet. "C'mon, beautiful. I've been cooped up a long time, and I need to stretch my legs. What say you and I hit the dance floor and show these people how its done?"

*Lana’s lips curved into a smile of pure contentment as Eddy’s lips were reluctantly pulled away from hers. Their time apart had done nothing to diminish the burning desire for each other that had always radiated between them, if anything; it had only grown more intense. During his time in the clink, many men had presented themselves to Lana, offering to take her mind off Eddy’s absence, and although she had been tempted more than once, she had never been able to go through with it. Eddy had held her heart firmly in his hands, despite being locked away from her in a tiny little cell. She had fretted about him the entire time he had been gone, grateful for the business of opening up her new club to give her something to occupy her time while she counted down the days until his release. Now, she wanted to pinch herself to make sure she wasn’t dreaming this beautiful vision of him sitting beside her, but the tingling of her lips from their passionate kiss made her realise she was firmly seated in the present.
Now, she laughed as he took her hand and pulled her gently to her feet. After hearing his offer to dance, she grinned at him and fluttered her thick ebon lashes as her indigo eyes sparkled.
~Well m’darlin, lead the way to the dance floor… we will show these kids how it’s done alright. That is of course, if you can keep up?~ Laughing, she spun away from him, while still holding on to his hand, before spinning back towards him. She carried on spinning while he led her out to the dance floor, smiling a greeting to the many people who tried to stop her on her way. Being the opening night of her latest club, Big Mama was in hot demand to hold court and be the centre of attention she so loved to be. But it was clear to anyone with a brain and a pair of eyes, that for the rest of the night she only had eyes for Eddy.
As they approached the dance floor, Big Mama nodded to the band leader who waggled his finger at his trumpet players who obliged and blew the first notes for the Charleston. As the beat started, Lana grinned at her partner as her feet began to move, her hands down by her side, flicking out at the wrist in time with her feet that flicked out to the side from her bent knees. She knew that Eddy was a good dancer, the best she had ever danced with, and she wasn’t at all surprised when the other dancers made a circle around them and began to clap in time with the music as the two danced the night away.
Before launching into a killer rendition of the Quickstep almost an hour later, Lana excused herself from Eddy long enough to pull one of her men Carlos from the crowd.
~Carlos, Master Eddy will be returning to the house with me. Please send word to Maria to make up my bed with fresh sheets, satin of course. We shall be leaving in approximately an hours time. I want a bath drawn in the double bath in the master bathroom, bubbles.. rose petals.. you know, the usual. Oh, and arrange for a catalogue from Levines’ will you? Eddy will need some new clothes and personal items as soon as possible. And if you could tell Pete to have the car ready and out front in an hour, that would be fantastic..~ kissing the air on either side of both of Carlos’ tan cheeks, Lana paused to grab two glasses of champagne off the tray of a passing waitress. Gliding over to Eddy, she saw two particularly amorous females vying for his attention. Shooting daggers at the girls who appeared to be in their late teens, Lana made a point of stalking over to Eddy and handing him the champagne.
~Lets have a toast darling.. to us!!~ she turned and glanced at the two females who were still hovering to the right of Eddy.
~Children should be seen and not heard little ones.. now.. run along, before I have security throw you out. ~ One of the females, a pretty little brunette, opened her mouth to say something, but her friend the redhead, after seeing Big Mama in action before, wisely urged her friend to keep her mouth shut as she pushed her away. Chuckling to herself, Lana raised her glass to Eddy’s, chinking the glasses together.
~To us, m’love. May we never be apart again!~ she took a sip of the champagne, relishing the cool liquid as it slipped down her throat like velvet. Finishing the glass in several long swallows, she handed the empty glass to a nearby waiter, while waiting for Eddy to do the same. Once he had, she grabbed his hand and pulled him back on to the dance floor, pulling him towards her for an energetic version of the Quickstep.*

Lana's laughter was like the chiming of crystal bells: light and pure and beautiful. His heart surged, and he held his hand out as she spun around, out and back again, and Eddy was reminded of days gone by when they'd spent their nights in drink and dancing. For his first night out, this was just what Eddy needed. He led her back through the potted plants and around the empty fish tank.
Eddy and Lana stepped back out into the noisy, smoky club. Eddy felt like a king; he had his freedom, newly given; he had his girl, who just happened to be the belle of the ball and the most well-recognized person in the joint; and the contraband booze was flowing all around. This was just the kind of place Eddy had left behind, and just the kind of place he wanted to be.
Lana was waving away her hoard of sycophants and well-wishers, and Eddy glanced around at the sea of faces turned toward them. He could see the envy on their faces, man and woman alike. Eddy didn't blame them. He was a newcomer on the scene, a nobody, and he doubted anyone would recognize him. They were all wondering who he was, that Big Mama should lavish her attention on him so completely. Eddy put on his biggest, most charming smile and loved every minute of it.
Eddy and Lana hit the dance floor like titans, and everyone made way for Big Mama and her handsome consort. They staked out a spot and cut a rug like nobody's business. Eddy was skillful, and Lana was entrancing, and before long they had drawn a crowd of onlookers. Eddy deftly deflected several attempts to cut in from other guys, throwing a wide grin back to the failed suitors as they glared angrily. He wasn't about to let any pinheads take his place with Lana.
As the band took a smoke break later, Lana stepped away to speak with a brown-skinned fellow from the crowd. Eddy pulled a hankie from his pocket to wipe the sweat off his brow, looking about him once more. He was startled to find two moon-eyed young girls in too much make-up standing before him, and though he could see their lips moving, he could not hear them over the blood rushing in his ears. He wasn't out of shape, but he had lost a step or two in the slam. Eddy was glad for the brief reprieve, and he smiled at the two girls and nodded like he knew what they were giggling about.
Lana returned with two glasses of champagne, and with glance and a few words sent the younglings scurrying. Eddy grinned and shook his head appreciatively. Everyone knew Big Mama was in charge. He accepted one of the glasses, and the two of them raised their glasses in a toast.
~To Us!~
"To Us!" Eddy echoed, and they drained their glasses in one single tip.
The band started up again, and Eddy and Lana once more moved in time with the beat, quickly seizing control of the dance floor. The floor quickly filled with dancers, but the two of them were given a wide berth. They danced until Eddy thought his shoes would fall apart, so he kicked them off and kept on. He'd forgotten the joy in dancing with a beautiful woman, and lost himself in the music, the crowd, and Lana.
Finally, the band wound down after another set, and Eddy cheered with the rest of the crowd as the musicians took a bow. A piano player tapped out a few notes, and a pretty girl perched atop the piano raised her voice in a saccharin aria. Eddy smiled and wrapped his arms around Lana's waist. Pulling her close, almost nose to nose, he said "Let's take a break, doll. I need a breather." He teasingly brushed his bottom lip against hers, feather-light, but pulled away grinning rather than giving her a proper kiss. He led her to the bar and looked for an empty stool for her to sit on. Seeing their approach, a burly bouncer overturned a fellow down the bar and brought one over. Eddy turned to motion for more drinks, only to find the bartender waiting with two glasses in hand. With a grateful smile, he accepted the glasses and handed one to Lana. On stage, the singing girl reached a crescendo.
"I like your new place, Lana." Eddy grinned, gazing into her eyes. "But I wouldn't care if it were a dock-side dive, long as you were there." He took Lana's hand and bowed over it as he pressed his lips to the back of her fingers. Eddy rose with a devilish smile on his face. "What time you shuttin' this place down? I like it and all, but I wouldn't mind goin' some place a little more private."

*Lana threw back her head and laughed when Eddy kicked off his shoes and continued dancing. Without skipping a beat, she turned to look for Carlos who appeared by her side as if silently summoned. Pointing to Eddy’s shoes midstep, Lana smiled her thanks as Carlos nodded and collected Eddy’s shoes before disappearing back into the crowd. The band was roaring, the club was pumping, and Lana was in heaven with her heaven sent angel dancing before her. She could not remember a time she had felt so happy, and after another several hours of dancing, the band finally bowed out and handed the floor over to the piano player and Holly began to seduce the crowd with her velvety smooth vocals. Slightly disappointed at his mere hint of a kiss, Lana followed Eddy towards the bar and eagerly sank onto the bar stool he presented to her. Smiling her approval at Derek the bartender, Lana drained her drink quickly as she tried to catch her breath. Despite the late hour, the club was still packed with people eager to snag a piece of Big Mama Celeste. Lana smiled weakly at them, waggling a few fingers when she felt the need before she leaned in closer to Eddy. Her smile broadened as he told her he liked the new place and kissed her hand, before she nodded at Eddy’s suggestion they go somewhere more private.
Glancing at the clock, she saw it was already after three am.
~We’ll have to close up in another hour or so, but I’ve had my fill for the evening.~ Looking around for Carlos, she grinned as he appeared again as if by magic with Eddy’s shoes in hand. Handing the shoes to Eddy, Carlos winked without saying a word as he nodded at Lana’s request to bring the car out front. Watching him disappear into the crowd, Lana laughed ~Ah what a find that one was..~
A few minutes and two drinks later, it was time to leave. As they glided through the side entrance and made their way down the narrow alleyway to the clubs front stoop, Lana cast an appreciate glance over her newest toy – a cherry red custom built Rolls Royce Phantom. Carlos was in the driver’s seat, grinning at her with his perfect white teeth which were almost a blinding white against his smooth chocolate skin.
Squeezing Eddy’s hand, she purred ~Do you like it darling? I’ve only had it a few weeks. It was a present from Big Don down in San Fran. A little thankyou for the quality and quantity of stock I’ve been sending down his way. Now that you’re back, I might get you to handle that shipment. The perks are good.. Big Don knows how to express his gratitude..~

Giggling, she waved at the few people who were still filing into the club at this late hour, as Carlos hopped out of the drivers seat to open the door for Lana and Eddy. Sliding across the leather upholstered back seat, Lana made room for Eddy as she waited for him to be seated. As soon as he was, she waited for Carlos to start up the engine and to begin driving before she reached out with her left hand to gently cup Eddy’s strong jaw, pulling it towards her for a passionate kiss that lasted the entire duration of the ride to Lana’s house.
“Mansion” would probably be the best term to describe Lana’s place. She had only just moved in when Eddy had gone down, and since then she had had two more wings added, as well as several renovations completed. She was eager to see what he thought of the place as Carlos drove the Rolls through the heavy iron gates that opened up with ease at the sight of the approaching car. As the car rolled down the smooth driveway, and passed the large fountain that stood in the middle of the circular path in front of the house, Lana reluctantly pulled her lips and hands away from Eddy so that he could get a decent view of the façade of the building before they went inside.
Maria was waiting for them at the large front doors that featured several panels of coloured glass, as Lana glided up the soft grey marble steps that perfectly complimented the grey marble pillars that decorated the front of the darker grey stone walls which were trimmed in white. She handed Lana some pieces of purple paper, messages she had taken during her Mistress’ absence and breathed a few words into Lana’s ear. Lana merely nodded and smiled before reaching out to take Eddy’s hand in hers.
~Maria, you remember Master Eddy. Eddy, Maria..~ she said by way of introductions.
~I hope you like what I’ve done with the place darling… without you here to keep me company, I needed something to take my mind off things..~ giggling, she waltzed inside, her heels clicking against the black and white checked tiles that made up the floor of the grand foyer. A large crystal chandelier hung from the ceiling that was decorated in intricate plaster cornices, casting various colours of reflected light around the large room. A large spiral staircase stood in the middle of the foyer, while several doors and archways led off into other parts of the house she intended to show him later. For now, Lana only had one room in particular, and pausing to say goodnight to Maria, she led Eddy by the hand to the staircase before she dropped his hand and skipped up several steps ahead of him. Giggling like a school girl, she clapped her hands excitedly as she turned around and called down to Maria.
~Send up some champagne please Maria.. but don’t come into the room. Just leave it outside the door, wontcha?~ winking at Eddy, she purred ~We wouldn’t want her seeing anything she shouldn’t now would we darling?~ Turning back around, she skipped up the last few remaining steps and then led Eddy down the plush carpeted hallway of mulberry tones to a large door that stood above three stone steps. Pushing open the door with a flourish, Lana switched on the light switch which caused the many scattered lamps around her suite to become illuminated in a soft golden glow.
Lana’s main suite was impressive in itself. She was now standing in her own foyer which housed a grand dressing station, complete with a large mirror surrounded by light bulbs and a dressing table that was littered with all the expensive creams, make up and perfume that money could buy. Walking over to the dressing table, Lana dropped her messages onto the smooth oak surface and as she looked closer, Lana saw a bottle of Eddy’s favourite cologne and smiled happily. Maria had such a good memory. A large walk in closet consumed the right hand of the room while a door that stood on the left beside her dressing table, held an equally impressive closet for storage as well leading to a large shower and toilet. Here, the flooring was a dark polished timber which seemed to reflect the soft glow from her beloved Tiffany glass lamps. Lana smiled at the appearance of something new that had not been here when she had left this morning.
~This must be for you, m’love..~
A handsome Oak armoire had appeared beside her dressing table, with several silk ties and kerchiefs placed upon a catalogue from Levines that lay upon the shiny surface. Opening up the doors, Lana smiled at the pressed shirts, trousers and jackets she found inside.
~Maria has been busy. I only sent word a few hours ago that you were going to be coming home.. I tell you, its so hard to find good help these days, but I seem to always find the best!~ Closing the door, she laughed. ~ I didn’t see any pyjamas though, you poor boy. Looks like you will just have to sleep naked!~
Pulling Eddy’s hand, she winked as she guided him through the foyer, and then down the three steps that led down to her master bedroom. A large round bed stood in the centre of the room, draped in custom made crimson satin sheets. Crimson and black pillows and cushions lay scattered over the head of the bed, while a crimson and black quilted velvet throw was folded back at the foot of the bed. A heavy crimson canopy adorned the four posts that decorated the outside of the bed, while white candles had been lit in strategic places around the bed, giving it an extremely romantic atmosphere. Turning to gauge Eddy’s reaction, Lana smiled contently and made a mental note to place a little bonus in Maria’s cheque this week. To the right of the room was a large oak desk and enormous oak bookshelf, while the left of the room featured a large white tub, trimmed in black on brass clawed feet. The tub was in front of a large lit fireplace that was trimmed in the same oak of the desk and bookshelf, but decorated in the Art Deco way of black and white which complimented the bath tub. The tub itself was full with warm bubbles and rose petals, just as Lana had requested. Despite the grandeur of the bed, bath and fireplace, what drew their attention was the impressive view that was displayed via the large French doors that led out to Lana’s balcony. All of the city lights were presented to them, as though they were a gift from the Gods, and Lana led Eddy out to the balcony.
As the night breeze blew her soft blonde curls, Lana leant back against Eddy’s broad chest. Sighing contently, she never wanted this moment to end. It felt so good to finally be home, in Eddy’s arms where she belonged. Turning her head slightly, she smiled up at him, her lips begging for his kiss. *

Eddy felt like he was wandering through a dream. A packed nightclub, music, drinking and dancing with the most beautiful dame in the world... and now the palatial manor house, overflowing with tasteful decor and posh splendor. His head swam, whether from disbelief or alcohol he couldn't decide. Just that morning he'd awoken on a hard cot with grimy sheets and a thin blanket, with the same cinder block walls and thick iron bars that had been his surroundings for more than two years. He rubbed his eyes and glanced around again, afraid his eyes deceived him, afraid that it would all melt away and he would find himself in the same cold, hard cell.
But the vision of affluence and luxury didn't fade away. Eddy let Lana lead him up the grand staircase, overwhelmed by the evening and the alcohol and the heart-melting smile that had stayed in his memory from the day he'd left. That smile, those lips, had haunted him every night. Could the nightmare truly be over? he wondered as they ascended the stairs. Is all of this real? It was almost unbelievable.
Lana's suite only deepened his sense of wonder. Expensive furniture, rich wooden floors, posh accents... Back in the day, before the prison, Lana and Eddy had shared dreamed of wealth and luxury, and they would laugh and swear they would have the world on a silver platter. Then they would laugh some more and kiss, and fall into each other's arms. Eddy never expected it would happen, though. Somehow he'd always expected he would just be a thug, a boot-legger. Fast Eddy Carlon, smuggler supreme, destined to spend his life in a cell or die on the road.
Lana, on the other hand, had made it. While Eddy was locked away, she'd taken her keen business sense, far-ranging connections, and magnetic charm and turned them into gold. She had surrounded herself with the trappings of royalty, the finest objects and beautiful people that money and power can buy. Eddy suddenly felt out of place, like a marble dropped into a sack of gemstones. Everything around him was classy and fine, while he was rough, unpolished. The suit he wore did little to make him look or feel like he belonged in such a setting.
Eddy's mind wandered to the diamond ring tucked safely in the bottom of his foot locker, back at the cramped little hole he'd called home. He had cut a deal with a known capo, Vinnie Fatone, indebting himself to the mobster in return for the money to buy that same ring. Eddy had wanted to propose to Lana with it, and would have if Vinnie hadn't cashed in his debt so quickly. Now, standing in the lap of luxury, the ring seemed like a cheap bauble compared to the things that Lana had got for herself. Even so, Eddy had done time for that ring... no, for Lana. He resolved to give it to her despite her already overflowing bounty.
Eddy's gaze was drawn to the view out the French doors, leading out to a balcony that looked over the entire city. The city lights burned like thousand miles of fire, and Lana led him through the doors and into the gentle night breeze. The smell of her hair, her perfume, was as intoxicating, and he couldn't resist wrapping his arms around Lana's slender waist, pulling her close. They stood and admired the scene layed out before them for some time, and Eddy was fulfilled. Lana snuggled in close with a contented sigh, and Eddy buried his face in her hair.
Lana turned her face up to look at Eddy, and his eyes fastened onto hers. All of his emotions poured from him in that gaze, and their lips met in a long, sweet kiss. The kiss gradually turned from tender to passionate, the years of loving and longing coming to focus in that moment, atop the world in a smuggler's paradise.
Eddy's desire flared with his breast, burning hot and bright like a flame. Heedless of his own actions, he swept Lana up into his strong arms, holding her against his chest without disrupting the fiery kiss that had set him ablaze. He carried Lana back through the double doors, into the poshly-appointed room beyond. The rose-petal scent of the bath reached him, gently returning him to his senses, banking the fire within. Eddy finally pulled out of the kiss, but barely, his mouth so close to Lana's that he could feel her breath on his face, as he could feel the heat of her body against his. He smiled, and brushed his lips against her cheek, her neck, his hot breath washing over her ear. His lips found her ear. He nipped at the lobe playfully, before breathing into her ear, "That's a fine looking bath." He kissed her neck again. "It would be a shame to let it go cold." With a supreme act of will, Eddy pulled his head back to gaze into Lana's eyes, a playful smile on his face. "What say we get cleaned up a bit?"
