Evangeline Winters[/b]
15:00
Evangeline scrolled through a long list of names and positions and ranks. It seemed like she’d been over this a hundred times by now. The captain wanted what the captain wanted. Evangeline was sitting in the Comm Center, It was a large impressive circular dome, towards the back rear of the ship, elevated from the rest of the hull, a large (for lack of a better term) ‘antenna’ was surrounding by small computer consoles, Comm. Officers sat around the computers, typing furiously, setting up networks around the ship and finally hooking up the system Evangeline had invented, the system that would hopefully allow the Miranda the ability to communicate with Earth actual in real time. While it was quite possible in theory, nobody could tell including Eva, if it was possible once they were in deep space, which is why it was left to the last minuet. Evangeline’s office was located in a small room overlooking the Comm Center, she was lucky enough to have two views, the Comm Center and Earth. She had to stop herself sometimes from starring out the window for hours at end. Evangeline had only been on the ship for three days, but her incredible memory meant she’d memorised most of it, there were still parts of the ships she hadn’t familiarised herself with, the Enforcers Floor, the engineering lab, but she was comfortable and confident enough.
Evangeline had her iRis hooked up to her office computer, it projected a blue holographic list in front of her, she scrolled through it with her finger. She stopped at her own name and title, Head of Communications. With a small start of amusement and equal terror, Eva realised she was only five down the list from the Captain. The Ship followed a military-Esq ranking system, if anything happened to the Captain and his number one, and then five of his underlings, Evangeline would become Captain. She shook her head and knocked on her table three times, thought she was sure it wasn’t wood, which was a rarity these days. Truth be told the mission housed more scientist than soldiers, though there were a few.
‘Computer, Captain Gray Status?’
Evangeline asked, finally swished her hand across the holographic list, it closed with a blur of light and colour that returned to the small pinprick on her iRis.
‘Captain Gray is travelling from level 12 to 8, destination Med Bay.
Eva nodded and checked her iRis.
12:00
‘Put me through Computer’
She asked delicately, there was a small buzz that signalled the computer was thinking.
‘Ms. Winters, how can I help you?’
The Captain replied briskly, he was a good man, Evangeline liked him. She lifted her goggles off her forehead and let them fall to her neck; she rubbed the sore red indent on her forehead the goggles left on her skin.
‘Captain, I’m done with the crew list, everyone’s on board and accounted for, the head of psychology boarded last night, and he’s in the med bay if you need to see him?’
Eva could hear the captain chatting to someone else as well as her at the same time, but she knew he was still paying attention, he cleared his throat.
‘No, that’s ok Ms. Winters; I’m heading their now, I’m sure I’ll run into him, I’m sure we’ll all get that opportunity before the mission is completed. He laughed loudly.
He broke contact, Evangeline rocked back in her chair. Twelve hours till launch. Her stomach gave a nervous flip.
