The Song touches us all in different ways, those of us it decides to claim. I've heard it described as sweet and haunting. I've heard it described like a marching anthem that made the limbs tingle when a Soul got close enough to the Slick. I've heard it described with all the poignant weight of a song that used to be "your song" with an old lover. The Song is different for everyone, but when it slides into you, it's there. It's in you. It's part of you. And it won't stop until you've seen the Slick.

Some of us never get there, can't get there on our own. Some of us always hear it. I think it's a little bit like dying in the middle of sex, right before you're about to come... so very, very close to that one single thing that you need to have. But maybe it might not be so bad to go, having gotten so close.

That's an optimistic way of looking at it. In the middle of sex or not, you're still a corpse before you get what you need.

It'll come for you. I can see it in your eyes, and I think that I hate you for it. ... bitch... It'll come for you, and it will show you a world that's just beyond my reach. It will open up a part of you that you never knew and were always missing. In spite of all the questions you'll have, things will start to make sense...

[Between Street Lights]

The woman who sat across the desk from you might have been the most beautiful you'd ever seen. Her smile was soft, perfectly formed with tender lips. Her eyes and her hair were like warm honey. Earnestly, she leaned across the desk, her slender hands resting on the middle of the surface. You thought for a moment about reaching out to touch them to see if they really were as soft as they looked. She spoke, and her voice was sweet and gentle.

"The world is a vast, amazing place. In the course of human history, man's ideas of what is possible have changed countless times. New discoveries and innovations have been made. New ideas have made society a better place. All of these advancements have led us as a people to where we are today. In spite of all the terrible, frightening things that happen every day, the world is still a good place. We can keep it the good place that it is. We can make it better. We can protect people. It's what we were made to do. We have the answers you're looking for. All those uneasy feelings you've been having since you started hearing the Call...?"

The laugh that left her lips must have been how the laughter of angels sounded.

"No, you're not crazy... I thought I was, too. It's okay. Don't worry. You don't have to worry any more. I promise. You're not crazy, you're not mad, you haven't taken leave of your senses. You're just very, very special. Truly, you are. You can hear the song that lies beneath our skin, and that means you can make this world better. I can show you how. We'll make the world bright. We'll unearth mysteries together. We'll bring amazing things into the light and be able to answer others' questions when they ask. I can show you the way. It's so very easy."

Positively radiant and beaming with excitement, she pushed her chair back in one smooth movement as she rose.

"Come with me. I'll show you the way."
