'Many were the children orphaned in the last great battle. Many were the adolescents, the youth with a burning in their souls, kindled and made bright by the fires of War. While most of these young people who have now reached adulthood, or young adulthood in too many cases, became either warriors or a new generation of workers, toiling to survive and help the others of their kin live, few were those with the natural aptitude for nature that Sabis himself took under his wing. A dozen or so in total when he started training these young minds, now narrowed down to seven of the brightest, fastest, and most diligent survivors. these seven have all proven themselves able in the woods and forests, across plains, and in all the other terrain of the area, all able to scout and explore unseen, all of them skilled archers now, and each with a fine sword arm.'
'But now, They all stand before their teacher, five young men and two young women, not one of them over the age of twenty years. Because now the old man faces the most difficult part of this sort of training. Picking which among them is best suited to be his apprentice, to be taught all that he knows, to be able to read the land like a book, become part of the terrain but also to make the terrain a part of them. While all seven show all the skills needed to become true rangers, and indeed, all of them are, only one will go on to become a Master Ranger like him, the other six will all become scouts and spies, using their abilities to lead the warriors of the Queen into the battlefield.'
'But that last one... the one who he has chosen, will be by his side when the fight comes. This new Ranger will become an elite master of the lands, able to cross the length and breadth of their chosen realm without leaving a single trace, and far faster then the fastest horse. One by one, he speaks to each, going down the line. Each one is dismissed after he's done speaking privately with them, through six of them... leaving only one more standing before him, the older of the two girls. He locks eyes with her, nodding his head once before speaking.' Welcome, to your new life, my apprentice....
