Evangeline Winters
The familiar and relatively constant hum of a starship in travel stopped. Evangeline lifted her head, she had been staring at a small computer chip for the last 40 minuets, her head swam. The Ship slowly began to hum and churn with life once again. It happened occasionally, but it was still a little disconcerting, it was a reminder to the vacuum of space that was so close constantly. Eva lowered the tiny instrument in her hands and sighed. She pulled a pair of yellow tinged goggles off her face and sat them comfortably on her forehead. Evangeline Winters was a pretty woman, her skin was pale from the amount of time she had spent in space stations, she had dark features with large brown eyes and long black hair.
Evangeline took a deep breath and looked around her small Quarters; it had gotten so dark and shadowed so quickly, the starship had moved further away from the sun, she stood up revealing baggy blue overalls.
‘Computer, lights on, level 2’
She leaned over a bed propped against a wall under a window, the dim lights turned on illumining the small room. Sleeping in the bed was a child. Evangeline pressed her hand gently against the sleeping boys shoulder; he smacked his lips together quietly and muttered.
The Moon was dark and brooding to the right of the starship, getting smaller and smaller, and stars twinkled brilliantly. Fear slowly began to kick in, she had spent most of her 20’s in space, but never at this distance... how would it feel to be so far from earth for such a long time? Eva sat by her son and gently brushed the child’s brown hair with her hands as she fumbled for something next to the bed, in a small compartment. She pulled out a small handheld computer, the screen was black and shinny, Eva pulled out a short black cable and plugged the end of a cable into the handheld. She gently turned her sons head, revealing a small silver circular instrument embedded into his temple. Eva plugged the other end of the cable into her son outlet. The computer immediately illuminated with green text and small changing linear patterns, the computer was monitoring her son’s brain and organ function. There was a similar device on the opposite side of the boys head next to each eye, the boys eyes flickered, revealing a milky white gaze. Everything seemed to be normal.
The Robotic parts of he son were surgically installed when he was several days old; he was born with a rare condition known as Eurotordanoophorsistiom. A ‘super virus’ that premature babies sometimes contracted, the virus had evolved from influenza, there was no cure, treatment was evasive with the installation of mechanics into the human body that could actually grow with the baby, but it kept him alive into old age. Her son’s right arm was also born without any bones, more surgery, but his hand sand arm functioned normally. It didn’t help that she gave birth to Ronan when she was 14. It was an incredible amount of stress and horror to go through when she herself was a child, even as a child prodigy.
When Eva was 16 she received a scholarship for the galactic academy where she studied robotics and interstellar communications. She graduated at 20.
Eva’s position aboard the starship was head of the robotics division, she also worked in the communications lab every second day for half a shift. She enjoyed her job, even if the hours were exhausting, but it worked because it allowed her to bring Ronan with her, he was one of the few civilians onboard.
Eva stood up pulling her goggles away from her head, her long dark hair got tangled in the rubber but she quickly pulled it free, she unbutton her overalls down to her waist, underneath was a plain black singlet with the starship logo threaded on the breast. She picked up the small delicate instrument she was previously working on and headed to the other side of the room. An android sat in the dark, emotionless and dead, the robot appeared to a normal young blonde woman with short cropped hair. Roughly the same age as Eva, it was hard to tell.
Each strand of blonde hair was actually a fiber optic cable capable of reading environmental changes and return atmospheric readings. The right side of her face was opened up, displaying thousands of tiny pieces of robotics, buzzing with millions of different delicate instruments. Eva lowered the small computer chip into a tiny chassis and smiled. She had been working on ‘Lara’ (Lmss, Adaptive differential pulse code Modulation, Regular pulse excitation linear Prediction coding, A-interface atomoton) since Ronan was little as a side job, a hobby, something she could work on when she didn’t have work and Ronan needed to be monitored, Eva found it hard to shut her mind down. Piece by piece for nearly nine years she had worked on the android. Eva was nearly finished but she was almost certain that Lara would never be operationally, everything was there of course, but the amount of energy needed to run her was simply too much, she equaled the entire starship in the amount of energy and fuel she would burn, it was one of the reasons she was the only one of her type. Her chest was slightly ajar; the fuel source would have to be inserted into the chest chassis.
Evangeline stood up suddenly, knocking a chair over, the room begun to glow red
“Computer, report?”
She asked as her Ronan stirred in bed.
“Red alert, all hands on deck”
The Computer replied calmly.[/b][/font]
